Originally released on May 16, 1980, Freedom of Choice marked DEVO’s mainstream breakthrough and cultural inflection point. With the explosive success of their single “Whip It,” the band brought their signature fusion of irony, technology, and subversive commentary to the masses, catapulting to No. 22 on the Billboard 200 and achieving Platinum certification in the U.S.

Driven by nervy synths, robotic rhythms, and a sharp political undercurrent, Freedom of Choice solidified DEVO as pioneers of the New Wave era. Tracks like “Girl U Want,” “Gates of Steel,” and the title song, captured a world teetering between conformity and chaos.
